That’s a wrap.

And so ends the board game challenge…

As a final tally, we played 90 board games over the 24 days, leaving 23 games unplayed. Pretty happy with the end result considering;

  • We all work fulltime jobs
  • We essentially lost a week while we were away at Quidditch nationals
  • There were multiple days when we played 0 games due to work and other commitments
  • We probably averaged an hour less sleep per night due to the challenge
  • New games kept arriving throughout the month, increasing the number we had to play.

To play 90 games in 24 days is a pretty mean feat, and makes me very grateful for having awesome housemates that would do such a crazy challenge with me, and who share my love of board games. Your average board game fanatic is lucky to get a game a week with friends being busy, but I’ve always got 2 other avid gamers around to join in.

Like with most things, the sense of obligation to do it makes it significantly less enjoyable. Both me and Kieran started to refer to playing games as “work” as we booked in time to play, and gamed whenever we were available, and had the energy to do it. Despite this, due to having some amazing games, overall, the challenge was very enjoyable, and confirmed that I have no regrets about the amount of board games we have.

For now, I have a week in Cairns, where I will detox, and not play any games for the entire week. After the detox, I look forward to spending further time with my beloved games, without the sense of duty and threat of punishment.48417469_348179152646090_2210676429538983936_n.jpg

Highlights of the adventure include:

  • Me and Kieran learning that a relationship between us would not work (Fog of Love)
  • A six second game of love letter
  • Kieran refusing to play white cards, then playing white cards
  • Making up our own rules from our vague memory of the game for GOT Card game
  • Kieran leading the ship to disaster in space alert
  • Matt “mashing A” and subsequently winning space alert
  • Playing Who Goes There, and having John become infected after drawing 1 vulnerable card, even though me and Archie had already drawn about 5 each

Top three games of the month:

  Aden Archie Kieran
1.         Spirit Island Who Goes There Spirit Island
2.         Who Goes There Scrawl Rajas of the Ganges
3.         Century Golem Mansions of Madness Aeons End

Honorable mentions to; Mansions of Madness, Clank, & Aeons End, which are old time favorites, but top 3 has to go to games I hadn’t played yet.

To sum up the experience, and my relationship with my board games, I’ll quote Bilbo:

I don’t know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Quidmas Update

It might seem like a bit of an obvious statement, but I have some great friends.

It’s really weird looking back and thinking that if I hadn’t decided to finally go to an O’Day in my third year of uni and join the Quidditch club (just out of curiosity), I wouldn’t know the majority of people I now consider my closest friends.

For this years Christmas dinner, we were able to host for the first time in the new masterbeaters abode. While the house isn’t exactly equipped to dine or sleep 20 people, we’re not excactly your average people, so it works. The night wasn’t super heavy on playing board games, but did see about 6 games hit the table, including an old classic: white blank cards. The night also saw us gain two new additions to our board game collection: Fog of Love, and Hanabi.

The goal of 40 over 4 days continues! Between the three of us I’m thinking we can manage 20 shots relatively comfortably, so being at 66/107 with 2 and a half days to go isn’t too bad.

MOAR Games!

I’m not sure if anything gets me as excited as new games.

This delivery was a real test, with the knowledge that there was a high likelihood that within a couple of weeks I would be forced to do a shot just to keep each of the newly acquired games. That aside, I am super keen for new games! This delivery covers my black Friday purchases, where I broke the $1000 mark on a single order. Doing some rough calcs to figure out my total spending of the year, this is my board game spending relative to income.

pie.PNG

I realise that 6.22% is probably a little too high of a percentage of income to spend on board games, and I am working on lowering this number. Not by buying less games of course, simply by being paid more.

Today marks my last work day of the calendar year allowing me to spend more time with my beloved games. Conceding that not all games will be played by the 25th, the goal is to hit another 40 over these 4 days.

Current standing: 51/107 games played

Panic Stations

60 games left to play with a week to go. We’re in very dangerous territory here, with the prospects of a mass cull to our gaming library, or serious liver damage.

The weekend saw a few games ticked off the list, including mage knight which was one of our longer games left. Once again accompanied by Matt & Kelsey to help us on the journey. Given that this took over 3 hours, we’ve come to the conclusion that it might be wise to neglect certain games (twilight imperium) for this month, and cop the shot penalty to minimize our losses.received_263266681015090.jpegBecause we don’t have enough games in our life, we also went and did an escape room on Sunday after getting in the mood by playing “Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective – The Thames Murders”. More games to come, and with heavy consumption of alcohol all but confirmed at this point, date for the Judgement day party soon TBC.

We’re Back!

Coming off a week long trip up to the Sunshine Coast for Quidditch Nationals, the board game count isn’t quite where we’d have liked it to be. We knew going into the week that it was going to be a challenge, and only ended up managing 12 games over the week, (most of which were played while camping) while Archie managed 2 solo while we were away. Not quite on par of target 4 games a day, but still adding a few numbers to the tally.

Having a day back before going back to work proved quite useful, knocking out 8 games for the day with the help of Matt, Kate & Kelsey. Considering we had a delivery of 15 new games while we were away, this was much needed. For those keeping track; our current tally is 37 games played out of our 107 game total. At this rate we are due for some very serious alcohol poisoning.

NB: See first post for updated games list, with games which have been played, struck out.

Weekend Warriors

Today marks a great day in the masterbeaters house! Knocked out some big games to get us in a good position to move forward, with help from a few friends.

Games for the day include:

Lord of the Rings LCG – Strong win on quest two, no dramas and a good start to the day.

Mansions of Madness – Two hours of play for Kieran and Archie to go insane, and the innsmouth mobs to swarming and killing us all.

Spirit Island (feat. Panda) – First playthrough, like usual, Kieran was in charge of the rules, and we ended up cheating a lot. Solid game, nice little win of a tutorial mission.

47571534_2039618839453052_9192714865238605824_n.jpgZombiecide (feat. Panda) – Failed for about our 10th time on Mission 6. So close to the end and then just overrun by extra activations due to all the zombies being on the map.

Xcom (Feat. Matt & Kelsey) – Some very lucky rolling gave us victory over an easy mission. Matt demonstrated he couldn’t manage money, putting us in deficit.

Space Alert (Feat. Matt & Kelsey) – Two plays of this, for anyone who hasn’t played, I recommend a round with Kieran as your captain. First play saw us kill no ships, be delayed about 6 times, and have everyone knocked unconscious. Second round saw a big improvement with Matt learning he just had to keep firing and not listen to Kieran.47443224_1482483471854122_8160687507374080000_n.jpg

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle (Feat. Matt & Kelsey) – Aced our way through the fifth year without too many dramas. Forgot we all had powers until about 10 rounds in which made the start a bit rocky.

7 games puts us back on track with a total of 9 for the weekend! Also good to knock out a few big games early to leave the smaller ones for weeknights. Have started putting aside the games we’ll have to take away to the sunshine coast in order to keep on track. All signs indicate its going to be a very long month.

And we’re off!

Possibly, the worst start we could have hoped for. With two housemates spending the majority of the day sleeping, we failed to play a single game. That being said, I did manage to sneak in solo games of: Clans of Caledonia & Fallout. Had never played either solo before, so was a new experience.

Managed 121 in clans, and lost fallout with the institute becoming too powerful after being a bit too committed to their quests.

To add to the problem, I also bought spirit island to add to the list today, so a net change of 1 game. Here’s for a big Sunday to get us back on the right track!47394784_546319742461913_6138345836146327552_n.jpg

Masterbeaters Board Game Adventure – How to Play

Introduction

As you may know, our little household is quite fond of the odd board game. Having acquired a bit of a collection in the last year, we figure its time to really show our appreciation for them. Our games really don’t hit the table enough, some even less so than others, so we needed a way to force the issue.

Rules of Play

For the 24 days leading up to Christmas, we need to make sure every one of our games makes its way to the table. For every game that does not make it to the table, it must be sold.

Now considering we have over 100 games, some of which take over 5 hours to play (Twilight Imperium eat your heart out), this is obviously going to be a bit of a challenge. There is however, a clause in the rules i  the event that some games do not make it to the table.

One member of the household may decide to keep a game that does not make its way to the table, if they decide to do a shot (45mls) of an alcoholic beverage with an alcoholic percentage in excess of 30%. All shots must be complete in one sitting, date TBD.

We welcome guests to accompany us on this adventure, so if any of the below games appeal to you, shoot us a message with a proposed date!
